January 14th 2012 marked the date of the first annual
Southeast Division’s Charitable Trust fundraiser. This event was hosted by
Jody and Steve Hill and by Jay and David Miller during the Florida Circuit
in Brooksville, FL.
The Charitable Trust is undertaking a huge project over the next two years
that will benefit all Danes and all dogs for that matter, mapping the Great
Dane genome will help our guys in many ways. While the mapping process
proceeds, two areas of concern are being focused on. Megaesophagus and
Dilated Cardio Myopathy, both affect our breed. The research community will
be more likely to work on Dane related issues because they will have a made
starting point. Long term understanding of the language of the genome could
lead to a goldmine of information which will enable genetic tests and
treatments to be developed to treat problems impossible to deal with what we
know today. The trust and the GDCA are also funding a project that will make
diagnosing Wobblers easier, less expensive and pain free. Very early
diagnosis is one of the goals of this project. Results to date have been
very encouraging.
The event attracted about 150 guests that had come to participate in the
Circuit and a few non-Dane people even attended the event. Jody and Jay
supplied and served a fabulous spread for all to enjoy. Over $7000 was
raised with check donations still being accepted. Many beautiful items were
donated for raffle and auction went to the highest bidder or lucky ticket
holder.
The hosts wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all that attended and
that contributed to the future of our breed.
