Veterinarians at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Animal Poison Control Center may have discovered the reason behind raisin and grape toxicity in dogs, due to similar symptoms found in a dog that had eaten homemade playdough containing high levels of cream of tartar. Cream of tartar contains potassium bitartrate, the potassium salt of tartaric acid, which can cause diarrhea, excessive thirst and acute kidney failure in dogs, though has a wide margin of safety in people—just like grapes do. 

It also explains why currants and tamarinds, which contain high levels of these same compounds, also can cause vomiting and kidney failure in dogs. Additionally, the level of these toxic compounds varies greatly by type of grape, season and ripeness, explaining why the same number of grapes can be safe for the same dog one time and not another. Note that these compounds are removed from wine and grape juice.

GDCA has recently funded a research study, a genetic study to help understand how the Irish (Boston) pattern is inherited in harlequin and mantle Great Danes.
